The length of an inpatient rehab stay is not fixed at admission. At Elev8 Centers, choosing a reputable inpatient rehab facility in Harlem, New York City means our clinical team sets each patient's length of stay based on their individual assessment and adjusts it as treatment progresses. Our inpatient program runs up to 28 days, with residential treatment available for patients who need longer-term structured care. To ask about admission and what to expect, call us at (646) 347-1891. We accept admissions 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
We are licensed by OASAS, accredited by NAATP, and LegitScript certified. Over 500 adults have received care at our Harlem location.
The Standard Duration: What 28 Days Means Clinically
Our inpatient rehabilitation program runs up to 28 days. This is consistent with the most common inpatient duration across the field, and research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) supports that longer stays are associated with better long-term outcomes.
The 28-day period covers medical stabilization, the early behavioral and psychological work of recovery, dual diagnosis treatment where applicable, and the beginning of aftercare planning. It is a starting point, not a ceiling.
Clinical Factors That Affect Length of Stay
Several factors shape how long a patient remains in inpatient care. Our clinical team reviews these at admission and throughout the program.
Substance type and severity of dependence. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal require close medical monitoring and can extend the detox phase before inpatient rehab begins. Our medical detox program runs approximately 5 to 6 days for most substances, with monitoring adjusted based on clinical presentation. Patients who need a longer stabilization period before transitioning to inpatient rehab will have their overall stay adjusted accordingly.
Co-occurring mental health conditions. When depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other psychiatric conditions are present alongside a substance use disorder, treatment takes longer to produce stable results. Our dual diagnosis program addresses both conditions simultaneously: psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and mental health counseling are part of the standard program, not a separate track. Patients with more complex psychiatric profiles typically benefit from extended inpatient stays or a direct transition into our residential treatment program.
Prior treatment history. Patients re-entering treatment after a relapse often present with a more complex clinical picture than first-time patients. Our team reviews what prior treatment included, where gaps existed, and what level of structure is needed this time to produce a different result.
Clinical progress and stability. Length of stay is reassessed throughout treatment. A patient who is progressing well and building a stable foundation for discharge may transition to a step-down program on schedule. A patient who needs more time before returning to daily life can remain in inpatient care or move into residential treatment without transferring facilities.
Home environment and aftercare readiness. Discharge timing considers whether the patient has a recovery-supportive environment to return to and whether the aftercare plan is in place. Our case managers and continuing care team begin discharge planning before the end of inpatient treatment, which includes referrals to our partial hospitalization program (PHP), outpatient programs, sober living, and ongoing psychiatric follow-up where needed.
What Comes After Inpatient: The Step-Down Path
Inpatient rehab is one stage in a continuum of care. At Elev8 Centers, patients do not have to transfer to a different facility when they are ready to step down.
After inpatient care, patients can transition to our PHP, where they attend daily structured programming but return home or to sober living in the evening. From PHP, patients move to our outpatient programs for continued clinical support while living at home. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) remains available across appropriate levels of care for patients with opioid or alcohol use disorder.
Insurance, Medicaid, and Length of Stay
Medicaid and insurance coverage can affect how length of stay is managed from an administrative standpoint. Our admissions team verifies coverage before a patient's first visit and works with payers on authorization throughout the stay.
We accept most Medicaid plans and some commercial insurance. Call us at (646) 347-1891 to verify your coverage before visiting. Our team handles the process so patients can focus on treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is inpatient rehab at Elev8 Centers? Our inpatient rehabilitation program lasts up to 28 days. The exact length of stay is based on each patient's clinical assessment and progress throughout treatment.
Can my length of stay be extended if I need more time? Yes. Patients who need longer-term structured care can transition into our residential treatment program at the same facility without restarting intake or transferring locations.
Does detox count toward the 28-day inpatient stay? Medical detox and inpatient rehabilitation are distinct stages. Detox typically takes 5 to 6 days and addresses physical stabilization. Inpatient rehab begins once a patient is medically stable and covers the behavioral and psychological work of recovery.
What happens after inpatient rehab ends? Our clinical team builds a discharge plan before you leave. This typically includes a step-down to our PHP or outpatient program, continued psychiatric follow-up if applicable, and referrals to community and peer support resources. Call (646) 347-1891 to learn more about our continuum of care.
