The first 72 hours in inpatient rehab are the most medically intensive part of the process. For most patients, this period covers clinical intake, the beginning of medically supervised detox, and the first steps of treatment planning. At Elev8 Centers, our clinical team is available around the clock from the moment you arrive at our Harlem facility. You are not going through this alone - choosing the right local inpatient rehab facility makes all the difference in your recovery journey. If you are ready to come in, call us at (646) 347-1891. Our admissions line is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and we can arrange transportation once you are pre-approved.
Elev8 Centers is licensed by OASAS, accredited by NAATP, and LegitScript certified. Over 500 adults have received care at 151 W 136th Street in Harlem, New York City.
Before You Arrive: The Pre-Approval Call
The process begins before you reach the facility. When you call (646) 347-1891, our admissions team conducts a brief pre-approval assessment over the phone, typically 20 to 30 minutes. They will ask about your substance use history, current health, and insurance coverage.
Once pre-approved, we can arrange transportation to our Harlem location. Arriving with an active plan in place means the clinical intake process can begin without delay.
Hour 1 to 4: Clinical Intake Assessment
On arrival, you complete a clinical intake assessment. This covers your medical history, substance use history, and any mental health conditions. You will meet members of our clinical team, receive an orientation to the facility, and be placed in the appropriate level of care, whether that is medical detox or direct entry into the residential program.
This assessment is the foundation of your personalized treatment plan. Nothing is assumed. The clinical team builds from what they learn about your specific situation.
Hours 4 to 72: Medical Detox Begins
For patients who are physically dependent on alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines, medical detox begins after intake. Withdrawal from these substances can produce serious physical symptoms, including seizures in cases of alcohol dependence, which is why 24/7 medical supervision is not optional. It is a clinical requirement.
Our detox program provides continuous monitoring of vital signs, medications to reduce discomfort and prevent dangerous complications, and direct access to clinical staff throughout. According to SAMHSA, medically supervised withdrawal management is the appropriate standard for patients with physical dependence. Patients are not expected to manage symptoms alone.
The active detox phase takes approximately 5 to 6 days for most substances. Alcohol and benzodiazepines may take slightly longer due to the risk profile of their withdrawal symptoms. During the first 72 hours specifically, the medical team is monitoring the most acute phase of withdrawal and adjusting medications as needed based on clinical response.
What Else Happens in the First 72 Hours
While detox is the primary medical focus of the first 72 hours, other clinical activity begins at the same time.
A psychiatric evaluation is completed as part of the intake process. If co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD are identified, our dual diagnosis program addresses them alongside addiction treatment from the start. Existing psychiatric medications are reviewed and continued where appropriate. Patients do not need to stop current medications to enter our program.
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is initiated where clinically appropriate for patients with opioid or alcohol use disorder. FDA-approved medications are used alongside counseling, not as a standalone measure.
The clinical team also begins building the structure of the inpatient program that follows detox. Patients are not in limbo between detox and rehab. At Elev8 Centers, both are in the same facility, so the transition is direct.
What the First 72 Hours Is Not
The first 72 hours in inpatient rehab is not the full picture of what recovery looks like. It is the medical foundation, stabilization and assessment, that makes the rest of treatment possible.
Patients who arrive frightened, in withdrawal, or uncertain about their decision to seek help consistently describe the experience at our facility as supported rather than clinical and cold. Reviews across third-party directories cite staff compassion as one of the most consistent features of care at Elev8 Centers.
Insurance and Admissions
We accept most Medicaid plans and some commercial insurance. Our admissions team verifies coverage before your first visit. To begin the process, call us at (646) 347-1891. Once pre-approved, transportation to our facility at 151 W 136th Street in Harlem can be arranged.
