The cost of addiction treatment is one of the biggest reasons people wait to ask for help. That fear is understandable, but experienced inpatient rehab support can help patients and families find options they may not know are available. In New York, Medicaid, military insurance, OASAS-funded programs, self-pay arrangements, and job-protected leave may all help make treatment more accessible.
Medicaid Coverage for Rehab in New York
Medicaid is one of the main ways people in New York pay for addiction treatment. For eligible adults, Medicaid may cover medically supervised detox, inpatient rehabilitation, and other levels of care at licensed treatment facilities. In many cases, the patient has little or no out-of-pocket cost.
New York Medicaid offers strong behavioral health coverage for people who meet income requirements or qualify through other pathways, such as disability or pregnancy. We accept Medicaid at our facility in Harlem, Manhattan. Our admissions team verifies Medicaid coverage during the intake call.
If a patient does not currently have Medicaid but may qualify, they can apply through the New York State of Health enrollment portal. In some urgent situations, enrollment may be reviewed more quickly when addiction treatment is medically needed.
Military Insurance and VA Benefits
Veterans, active-duty service members, and dependents may have addiction treatment coverage through TRICARE or the Department of Veterans Affairs. These programs can cover services such as inpatient rehab and medication-assisted treatment for eligible patients.
VA benefits may cover care through VA-affiliated facilities. In some cases, private licensed treatment may be available through the Community Care program, depending on eligibility and local access.
TRICARE works more like private insurance, with in-network and out-of-network benefits that depend on the plan. We accept military insurance at our facility, and our admissions team can review what applies to each patient’s situation.
The Role of OASAS in Funding Treatment
The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, or OASAS, helps fund treatment programs across the state. These programs are designed to support people who have no insurance, limited coverage, or very few financial resources.
OASAS-funded beds can make treatment possible when private pay is not realistic. Availability can change, and some programs may have waitlists depending on demand.
OASAS also offers a helpline at 1-877-8-HOPENY and a treatment locator at oasas.ny.gov. These tools can help people find programs by location and service type.
Sliding Scale and Self-Pay Arrangements
Some licensed rehab facilities offer sliding scale fees. This means the cost may be adjusted based on income and ability to pay. Not every facility offers this, so it is worth asking directly during the admissions call.
Self-pay is another option for patients who do not want to use insurance or do not have active coverage. Some facilities may offer payment arrangements that spread the cost over time.
If self-pay is being considered, ask for a written breakdown before admission. That should include what is covered, what is not covered, and when payment is due.
Using the Family and Medical Leave Act During Treatment
Paying for treatment is not the only financial concern. Many people worry about missing work or losing their job while they are in rehab. For eligible employees, the Family and Medical Leave Act may help protect their job during treatment.
FMLA can provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave each year for qualifying medical reasons. Addiction treatment can qualify when the employee meets the requirements.
FMLA does not pay for rehab, but it can reduce the fear of losing employment while getting care. Our admissions team can help patients and families understand how to approach this conversation before admission.
Other Coverage Worth Checking Before Assuming You Cannot Afford Treatment
Before deciding rehab is out of reach, it is worth checking every possible source of help. Some employers offer Employee Assistance Programs that may cover an assessment, short-term support, or referrals to covered treatment.
Some marketplace plans also include behavioral health benefits that apply to inpatient rehab. Many people do not realize what their plan covers until someone verifies it.
Our admissions team is available around the clock to help patients and families review possible financial assistance. The call is confidential and can usually clarify the next step within minutes. Visit our admissions page to learn more about how intake works.
